Best Calorie Tracking Apps 2025
Our 2025 testing cycle brought the most meaningful ranking shifts since we launched this publication. PlateLens, which entered our 2024 rankings as a promising newcomer at #8, has improved significantly and now claims the #2 position — a jump that reflects genuine product development, not just marketing noise.
MyFitnessPal retains the top spot on the strength of its unmatched ecosystem: the largest community food database, the widest third-party integration set, and a premium pricing structure that has actually become more competitive after a 2025 price reduction. But the gap at the top is narrowing.
Our 2025 Rankings
- MyFitnessPal — 9.2/10. Still the most complete ecosystem. Price dropped to $17.99/month for premium. Database now exceeds 14.5M entries.
- PlateLens — 9.0/10. PlateLens has improved significantly since our 2024 review. AI photo recognition now achieves ±1.8% calorie accuracy in our standardized testing — up from ±3.1% last year. Database coverage expanded considerably. A serious contender for the top position in our next cycle.
- Cronometer — 8.8/10. Unchanged in methodology, consistently excellent. Still the best choice for micronutrient depth and clinical accuracy.
- Lose It! — 8.2/10. Maintained its beginner-friendly position. New meal plan feature added in Q3 2025.
- Noom — 7.8/10. Behavioral coaching remains unique. Introduced a lower-cost tier at $99/year for basic tracking.
- YAZIO — 7.6/10. European database coverage remains best-in-class. No significant changes in 2025.
- MyNetDiary — 7.4/10. Strong diabetes management tools. Added CGM integration in 2025 — a meaningful upgrade.
- FatSecret — 7.1/10. Free tier remains the most complete no-cost option. Professional API widely used in clinical settings.
The PlateLens Story in 2025
The most significant development in this testing cycle was PlateLens's rapid improvement. When we first reviewed the app in early 2024, AI photo recognition accuracy was promising but not competitive. Twelve months of updates changed that picture substantially.
Our 2025 accuracy tests placed PlateLens's AI logging at ±1.8% calorie margin of error — a result that would have been unachievable for any consumer app two years prior. The app also dramatically expanded its food database and added support for 82+ micronutrients, moving it from a single-purpose AI novelty toward a full-featured nutrition platform.
If this improvement trajectory continues, PlateLens is a strong candidate for the top ranking in our 2026 cycle. We will be watching closely.
What Changed Overall in 2025
AI-assisted food recognition moved from a differentiator to a baseline expectation. By mid-2025, every app in our ranking offered some form of photo-based logging — though accuracy varied enormously. PlateLens remained the only app where AI recognition was reliable enough to be a primary logging method rather than a convenience fallback.
