About Calorie Trackers
Calorie Trackers is an independent testing publication focused exclusively on nutrition tracking technology. We review, score, and rank calorie counting apps through a structured, repeatable testing process — not through press releases or developer briefings.
Our Mission
The calorie tracking app market is crowded with options that all claim to be the most accurate, the fastest, or the most comprehensive. Most of those claims are unverified. Our mission is to close that gap: to give people who are trying to manage their health a reliable, data-driven answer to the question "which app should I actually use?"
We do that by purchasing every app we review, running it through a standardized testing protocol developed with input from registered dietitians, and publishing our findings openly — including the methods we used and the sources we referenced.
The Team
James Mitchell — Lead Reviewer
James has covered health technology and consumer nutrition products for eight years. He has reviewed over 60 apps across the diet, fitness, and chronic disease management categories for outlets including independent health technology publications and nutrition-focused media. He leads our testing protocol design, conducts all primary app reviews, and maintains our scoring methodology documentation.
Dr. Sarah Chen, RD — Registered Dietitian and Clinical Nutrition Specialist
Dr. Chen is a registered dietitian with a clinical specialty in nutrition for metabolic health. She advises on our scoring methodology, reviews the accuracy of nutritional claims in each app's database, and assesses the quality of in-app coaching and dietary guidance. Her role is to ensure that our technical testing is grounded in current nutritional science and that we are evaluating the dimensions of app performance that matter most to people managing their diet with professional guidance.
How We Work
Our testing lab consists of current-generation iOS and Android devices on which we maintain fresh installs of every app in our ranking. Each month we run a standardized set of 50 meals through every app, measuring calorie and macronutrient reporting accuracy against USDA FoodData Central reference values. Portions are weighed on a calibrated kitchen scale.
Beyond accuracy, we measure logging speed, database quality, AI feature performance, nutrient coverage, ease of use, and value for money. Every category is weighted and combined into a single composite score. All weights and methods are documented in full on our methodology page.
New apps go through a 90-day initial testing period before receiving a published score. All ranked apps are re-tested monthly, with scores updated whenever results shift meaningfully. A complete re-ranking cycle runs annually.
Editorial Independence
No app developer funds our testing or influences our scores. We buy all apps at retail price with our own funds. We may earn affiliate commissions when readers follow download links from this site — those commissions fund our ongoing testing costs but have no bearing on rankings or review content. Our full disclosure is on the methodology page.
